Can Spurs create another Gareth Bale?

I have written before that in top level sport talent is not enough, everyone has talent, it's how you apply talent that makes the difference.

Why is Harry Kane succeeding where proven goalscorer Roberto Soldado is failing? What makes Cristiano Ronaldo or Gareth Bale the players they are? As a coach you need to define what separates some players from others, it's not natural talent, that can only get you so far. If you can determine what makes them tick then you have a chance of applying that to someone else and creating better players.

If you cannot explain what makes them different then you don’t know what you’re working towards and thus you will never arrive. Without this knowledge, a coach can't provide the essential skills that aid players to attain greatness. Simply do what has always been done and you won't create a new type of player, like Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer or Hugo Lloris, two goalkeepers who are a new breed of sweeper keeper.

The answer is in the head, they are driven, motivated by a long-term goal so if that is the case why would you not want to find the long-term goal that motivates every player you are coaching? Football really must catch up and Tottenham can compete with the richer clubs if they draw upon factors like this to make a significant difference.

Cristiano Ronaldo changed his game at Manchester United from talented to superstar status by working single-mindedly to become the best he could be. He didn't stay in his comfort zone, he pushed himself. Gareth Bale did the same, he brought a new free-kick to football, one that swerved both ways. That didn't happen by accident, he had to work on it every day, again with a single-minded determination.

As a club shouldn't we, therefore, be working out what gives these players that single-minded determination so we can replicate it in others? A transfer policy has to have an element of finding players with that mental attitude, find four or five players with a Ronaldo or Bale attitude and you would have quite a team as they develop together. I hope that has been part of our criteria, one assumes it must be given the type of player we have been after.

It's partly what makes it such an interesting time for Spurs given we can't afford the wages of the finished articles the tiny 'jealous of Chelsea' minority advocate we should buy. We have to create the next Gareth Bale and thus must use every means possible to aid that. Learning from sports science in other sports is a key component of that.

Put Gareth Bales' mental approach into Érik Lamela and he would go to the next level, after two years that should have been achieved by now. If we were attacking the problem with vigour we wouldn't still be in a position of hoping he comes good. Unfortunately, we are paying lip service to the problem and thus we create more players like Mousa Dembélé, players who are happy in their comfort zone and don't want to press themselves to be better than they are.
