A motivated team is a successful team

Many fans don't understand the role of a psychologist in relation to a sport so we'll have a quick look at what they aim to do.

First and foremost everyone is an individual so one size does not fit all, therefore they can not impose a solution on someone, it is far more a process of education. The psychologist needs to establish the true motivation of his pupil, people will often say that they are motivated by money when, in fact, that's not the case.

When you find your true motivation then you'll do whatever it takes to achieve it. That is the key, the individual will do whatever it takes to achieve it, not the psychologist becoming a football coach, he is just getting the brain in the best possible position for the player to progress under the coach. It's all about the individual taking responsibility for himself, only he controls his future.

A player who doesn't appreciate that that can be of assistance is not going to ask for a sports psychologists help, even though they are probably the ones who need it the most. As we want all players to be fully motivated for every game then grasping their individual motivation will help a head coach work with their motivational buttons. It should be said that an individual motivates themselves, it's their body, their brain, they determine how they take information in and what effect it has on them.

A player might be motivated to get into his national team, it might be to secure a move to a bigger club, it could be anything but when you now what it is you can work with it. You can remind them a representative of the national side is at the game today or will be seeing a recording, you'll remind him what you want him to do and what to look out for.

However, a head coach decides to do it you make sure the player knows how the individual game is an important step for him to achieve his individual goals. He will achieve more that way than if he is trying to motivate someone by reminding of the team goals unless he can relate the team goals to the individuals personal goals.

If a player works to improves the skill in his feet, he should be working to improve it in his head as well. A talented head and talented feet make for a talented player but if he only has it in his feet then obviously he will be a lesser player. We are in a generation where every edge is sought in top sports, it is about time football caught up with the rest of the sporting industry they are in.

A sports Psychologist will work with a player to help them assess their mental strengths and weaknesses, they will help a player work better with other staff and learn more from Pochettino and his coaching team, they will help a player be mentally ready for competition and teach a player how to motivate themselves.

They are key elements to success, having a team, a squad of players who can motivate themselves for any game is a huge plus that could have massive consequences for where we finish in the Premier League and how we perform in cup competitions. It stands to reason that if a player can't motivate themselves then a head coach is also going to have difficulty, as soon as collective motivation wears off, individual motivation takes over.

Our players clearly haven't been motivated at certain times, in certain games, Newcastle United at home at the start of the second half, for instance, it cost us three points.
