Tim Sherwood proven right

For top sportsman the mental side of their sport is everything and football is no different, it's why a fan has to look at a players mentality to determine whether he is going to help bring success or not.

We have Emmanuel Adebayor who seems to be at Tottenham for one thing and one thing only, money and Etienne Capoue wants an easy life, being guaranteed a starting place. There are plenty more, Tim Sherwood pointed that out to Daniel Levy and that conversation may well have helped Levy to agree to leave certain players out in the cold to force them out the club, instead of having the deadwood hang on as normally happens.

Brazilian Heurelho Gomes did just that at Tottenham. Gomes joined in July 2008
In 2011/12 he sat on the bench 4 times in the Premier League, in 2012/13 he didn't feature in a single Premier League or UEFA Europa League squad, in 2013/14 he was not in a single match-day squad. He was spoken to by many clubs but was picking up £50,000-a-aweek at Spurs so simply refused to leave. During those three seasons, he went on just one loan spell to Bundesliga side Hoffenheim in January 2013 until the end of the season.

He is another who came out recently and said players clubs buy should be guaranteed a starting place, That is not a winning mentality, that is an 'I want charity' mentality. I have questioned Paulinho's mentality on many occasions, his statement that he couldn't be bothered to learn English was telling, if you have that laziness in your make-up it will manifest itself in other areas and as communication is a part of football, he clearly wasn't doing everything he could to be the best player he could be.

Now he has confirmed what Tim Sherwood basically told us, he's here for the money. Paulinho is 26 (27 in July), he is in his football prime and incredibly he is going to China to earn an extra £30,000-a-week. He isn't going there for footballing reasons obviously and getting  virtually all our money back on him is a master stroke. He'll be joining Demba Ba at Guangzhou Evergrande. The story is no pie-in-the-sky story invented by a journalist, it's true and as Spurs have a bid Chinese following taking one of our players will be big news, a big boost to the game.

Adebayor, Capoue, Gomes, Paulinho all provide ample proof that mentality matters, players without it can't take you to the next level. As such guessing at their mentality before we sign them is archaic in the modern world, football needs to catch up with science and Tottenham should be leading the way. At least we have a head coach who knows mentality matters
