Rafael van der Vaart joining La Liga side

Former Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rafael van der Vaart will reportedly sign a three-year-deal with newly promoted Real Betis in Spain.

The Dutchman is fondly remembered at White Hart Lane, leaving in a failed attempt to save his marriage, his then wife worked on German TV. The 32-year-old has left Hamburg and is reported by German newspaper Bild as having agreed a contract with the La Liga team based in Seville.

The paper say he will join Real Betis when his contract with Hamburg expires on 30 June instead of joining former club Ajax. Director Marc Overmars and Ajax coach Frank de Boer had openly stated they were hoping to lure him back home but it is thought Van der Vaart has chosen to go to Spain to be nearer his grandparents who live in Andalusia.

Earlier this year Van der Vaart revealed he had promised his grandfather he would join Andalusian side Cadiz one day, but with their relegation to the Segunda division that wasn't an option. Joining Real Betis means his grandparents can make the hour journey to see him play regularly.
