Digging deeper into Spurs South American transfer target

The centre-backs will be changed in the summer, Vlad Chiriches will be allowed to leave and Younes Kaboul will be promoted to all clubs needing a centre-back. In addition the club wants to set up a conveyor belt of talent so when one player leaves another is ready to simply step into his place.

Digging deeper into Spurs South American transfer target

West Ham defender Winston Reid will be 27 in July and while he is an option, he is not a guaranteed signing. Still in the mix are 27-year-old Mexican Hector Moreno at La Liga side Espanyol, he'll be hoping to regain some fitness and form, although his age will now count against him. Then there is 24-year-old Argentinian Ezequiel Munoz at Palermo is out-of-contract at Palermo, although it's thought he will be joining AC Milan.

Another name to add to that list is 19-year-old Argentinian Emanuel Mammana who plays at River Plate and already has a full international cap picked up in January last year when he came on in the 77th minute for his country in their 2-0 friendly win over Slovenia. That senior debut came before he had made his debut for River Plate, which is exactly how Javier Mascherano, the player he replaced, started his career.

Last season he sat on the bench once, played 7 games at the FIFA Under 17 World Cup, in which Argentina finished 4th. This season he has played 8 of the 9 games for Argentina Under 20's in the South American Championships and sat on the bench twice for River Plate before making his debut at right-back on November 24th in a 1-0 away defeat to Racing Club de Avellaneda. He then played in the following game on November 30th as the right centre-back in a 3-2 win over Club Atlético Banfield at home.

His next game was on December 4th in the Copa Sudamericana Final 1st-Leg away against Atlético Nacional. This time he played 61 minutes as a right-back in the 1-1 draw but the fact that he was picked for such an important match indicates his ability and potential.

As you would expect at his age he is not the finished article but then again neither is Eric Dier and he isn't doing too badly. As I pointed out in a recent article. not all players are bought to go straight into the first-team but two experienced centre-backs and two young centre-backs builds for the future.

He may not be a first-choice option, he'd be a signing for the future, someone to bring along so when an existing centre-back leaves he can step into the fold, but does he have the game to be a success?

The realities of football in Argentina is that there is no money so anyone who shows promise is sold abroad and a new youngster brought in to take their place. Argentina is a breeding ground therefore for young talent, it gets a chance at a young age and is able to develop quicker than youngsters over here, with a few exceptions.

Tim Sherwood did Spurs a favour by throwing in Nabil Bentaleb and giving Harry Kane a run in the side. As the former head of player development at Tottenham it was his job to develop young talent so it's hardly surprising he turned to youth when others were giving up. Fans now owe him a debt of gratitude rather than the pathetic petty-minded abuse he gets.

Before the World Cup Argentina called up a group of players to provide practice for the World Cup squad preparations and young Mammana was among them. He is said to have impressed which was why they gave him some game time in the senior team. At the Under 17 World Cup, in which he was captain, Mammana was one of the stand-out performers displaying a class and composure that marked him out as a future star.
