Yedlin will have to handle Spurs boo boys

Former German international, Tottenham striker and now US Mens National Team (USMNT) manager, Jurgen Klinsmann, was asked for his advice by DeAndre Yedlin before he signed for Spurs.

Yedlin will have to handle Spurs boo boys

He was already on record as having said he believes all US players can benefit from going abroad where football is the culture and then bring that experience back to the USA. He is also on record as having said that the passion of the Tottenham fans shocked him and made his spells at White Hart Lane hugely enjoyable.

In November he was back at the ground again and spoke with Daniel Levy, Gary Mabbutt, Ossie Ardiles before watching the Stoke City defeat. He has kept in touch with the club so knows the environment and as a football manager himself developing a nations football he can assess what he sees at the club now.

He was recently interviewed by US Soccer and asked last summers signing DeAndre Yedlin.

Q - DeAndre Yedlin has been granted a work permit and is on his way to Spurs. What types of challenges will he face there, and what advice have you given him?

"I think with DeAndre Yedlin, we all know that he’s a very talented kid coming through the ranks and he needs time. He’s still raw, he’s still developing and Tottenham knows that. Yes, we hope he’s going to play there right away, but if he doesn’t it’s not the end of the world because he has to learn to grind things out and fight his way through.
"He’s in a very good environment there that teaches him to focus daily on his job and deliver his qualities. Then hopefully over time he comes through to make his mark on the Premier League. He has the talent to do so, but it will be a lot of work for him."

One of the problems 21-year-old Yedlin will face is that many Tottenham fans will expect too much too soon. He, as Klinsmann says, is a raw talent, he is not the finished article so there will be mistakes. A whole section of fans were anti Harry Kane but time has shown those fans were wrong, a whole section of fans are anti Nabil Bentaleb, almost certainly because he was introduced by Tim Sherwood, again a whole section are anti Ryan mason and and anti Danny Rose, even though he has improved immensely under Pochettino.

Yedlin won't have experienced the level of passion he will get here, nor will he have experienced the level of criticism when a mistake costs points. He'll have plenty of young help around him though with the young players that have endured the same.

But more than that Klinsmann's words show the mentality required at Tottenham, constant improvement, work hard every day. Danny Rose has recently been telling the press that if you don't give 100% in training you don't get picked. He has a lot of learning to do, there will be ups and downs but with his NFL speed and the quality he showed at the World Cup in Brazil, I'm looking forward to seeing him play in a Spurs shirt and watching his development.

The game we play is not a simple one, yes it's just push and run but it takes a level of game reading and anticipation that some footballers struggle with. Clearly he is up for a new challenge so by coming to the most popular league in the world he would appear to have the right mentality for Pochettino to work with.
