Were Spurs watching Brazilian striker Jonas?

A Tottenham scout was at the Benfica vs Guimaraes match last night that the Portuguese Primeria Liga leaders Benfica won 3-0 with goals from Jonas after 14 minutes, John after 54 and Gaitan after 90 minutes.

Were Spurs watching Brazilian striker Jonas?

Previous Tottenham have been linked with Nicolás Gaitán, their Argentine captain and thus as one site has jumped to the conclusion that is who we must be watching that everyone else is simply rehashing the same story until it becomes assumed to be true by weight of articles.

Never one to read a newspaper then take what is written as my opinion I prefer to think for myself. We have a new head coach and a new head of recruitment. Yes they will cast an eye on the list Tottenham already has but they will also be adding their own names and researching others.

We know we need to find some bargains and reduce the wage bill. Benfica, as we can see below, is made up largely of South Americans (6 Brazilians, 1 Argentinian playing). Porto only own part of their players, they deal with third party owners and buy a percentage of a player only, so when sold they only receive part of the fee, the investment company who generally is the third party owner gets their lions share.

Nicolás Gaitán is 26-years-old so fits the profile of a player we would be interested in, all nice and cosy, but Tottenham are after a striker as well. We are in advanced talks to sign André Ayew from Marseilles who plays in Gaitan's position. Benfica are said to have reduced their asking price for Gaitan from £36m ($54.44m - €45.99m) to £28m ($42.34m - €35.77m), although with the lazy reporting in this country that may well be euros they haven't bothered adjusting. Either way Tottenham are not going to pay that for a playmaker.

I suspect we are not after a frontline world class striker and the wages they command. We have had Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado and neither are consistent. Harry Kane is coming through and banging in the goals, another one yesterday. We are trying to get Danny Ings in the summer, which along with Kane would give us two young strikers for the future. What they would need is an experienced striker and 30-year-old Brazilian Jonas could fit the bill.

He is a player we watched last year at Valencia. His contract runs out in 2016 and he is currently valued around £7 million ($10.59m - €8.94m), which would go down in the summer. He plays the secondary striker role so would provide cover for Christian Eriksen, as well as being able to play either wing. Can he score? Well he has 4 goals and 1 assist in 9 Primeira Liga games and 11 goals and 1 assist in just 13 games in total this season. He has played 6 games for Brazil scoring 2 goals. Sounds like he knows where the net is.

Last season he was with Valencia in La Liga so ho did he fair there? He has 10 goals and 1 assist in 31 league games. Doesn't sound that impressive so digging a little deeper shows 4 goals in 9 games as a centre forward, 4 goals in 11 games as a secondary striker, 1 goal and 1 assist from left wing, 1 goal from 7 substitute appearances (minutes totalling less than 2 games), 2 games on the right wing and in 2 games he was also captain.

As a striker or secondary striker he scored 8 goals in 20 games and the fact he was made captain twice shows leadership qualities.

Now fans want big names but every squad must have experienced players they can call upon when needed to do a job and this guy looks like someone who could fill in when needed in several positions who has goalscoring ability. Every side needs players who are not on huge wages, rather like the role Kyle Naughton has performed for us.

Jermain Defoe would be my choice as we know him, know what we get, he can fit the system and has the pace we don't have, but Jonas as a back up player may be an option, depending upon which competitions we are in next season.

Could it be that we weren't watching Gaitan at all, but were watching Jonas again?
