Chadi visits 'Super Nurse'

The Tottenham Hotspur Foundation is a charity set up by the club to work to improve the quality of peoples lives. Nacer Chadli took part in their health check scheme when he attended Wood Green Library to have a health check himself.

The scheme has been devised so that people can get a quick health check that they would have had to go to their local GP to get previously. We all know you can never get a GP appointment when you are actually ill so taking some weight off their shoulders can only help the situation.

Having these health checks is an easy way for people to help so not only do they get an update on their own health but they are helping their GP and the local community in general.

These health checks take place at pop-up clinics, by a practitioner employed by the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation - known as ‘the Spurs Nurse’. Using pop-up clinics mean they can set up a clinic is high traffic areas accessible to people, thus maximising the numbers using the scheme, which currently only operates in Haringey.

Chadli had his own health check that involves measuring height and weight for BMI (Body Mass Index) calculations, taking blood pressure, taking a blood sample to test cholesterol levels and doing a finger prick test to test glucose levels for diabetes.

"We have to encourage this, to check if the blood pressure is good, and the heart rate. I think people have to take care. I heard that more than two thousand checks have been made in the last year, and I'm very proud of it.
"I would encourage them to go and to make a good decision, to make a check. It doesn't take long, I did it. It's good to start 2015 fresh.  It doesn't hurt at all. It's most important that you stay healthy, and for this you have to make those kinds of checks."

Maria Abraham, Tottenham Hotspur Foundation Health Project Manager, explained that the scheme is designed to try and identify any possible health issues as early as possible, and praised the work of the 'Spurs Nurse'. The scheme has targeted men as statistics show they tend not to visit the GP so the fact that 4 out of 5 taking part are men demonstrates the projects success.

"Her biggest strength is she loves the community, and gets to the places where people go who don't use health services. So it's understanding our community, feeling part of it, in the heart of it. We are in Haringey, we are in the community, we are giving back something to the community."

Waiting until there is a problem is the lazy approach, you may feel fit and healthy but prevention is better than cure so every Haringey resident should be going along to take a test, just to be on the safe side and have their health status confirmed.
