Van Dijk too expensive at £10m

Tottenham are once again looking to buy Hector Moreno from Espanyol and are keeping an eye on players for the summer as well.

Van Dijk too expensive at £10m

Younes Kaboul and Vlad Chiriches are surplus to requirements at the centre of defence so a second upgrade will be needed, one name in the frame is Virgil Van Dijk. He plays for Celtic so is in a weak division with little in the way of quality football. The price suggested is £10 million ($15.56m - €12.73m) is from such a league is nonsense, if he weren't available for half of that then he's not worth pursuing as there are plenty of other players who can be bought for less than his quoted figure.

The Daily Express suggest Liverpool and Arsenal are also interested but neither will they be at that price. His age is right at 23 but he would be stepping up grades of football and we have seen with the consistent failure of Vlad Chiriches that that doesn't always work so £10 million would be far too big a gamble.

Playing a low grade of football his contribution can't be compared with those in the Premier League. Victor Wanyama hasn't set the world alight after Southampton overpaid (£12.76m - $19.85m - €16.25m) for him, with injuries he has come into the side and they have lost their defensive solidarity as a result. Selling clubs like to throw a lump on for potential but paying a lump for something that may not happen has to be carefully controlled and while a small premium could be paid a large one should not. You are potentially throwing money away.

Sunderland are reported to be ready to offer £8 million ($12.45m - €10.19m) for him so that is a far more likely destination, transfermarkt have his value at £4.4 million ($6.84m - €5.6m) and he is yet to gain a Dutch cap.

Tottenham already have one centre-back they need to develop in Eric Dier and will have a new centre-back when Hector Moreno arrives, assuming he does. It would be too much to have to develop two young centre-backs, especially if injuries forced us to play them both together for any period. It is highly unlikely Pochettino would want to put himself in that position.
