The future of Vertonghen & Lloris

The two figures regarded as our best players over the last few seasons have been Jan Vertonghen and Hugo Lloris. This attitudes have been different and thus we are seeing Lloris as our one world class player now who consistently puts in top drawer performances.

The future of Vertonghen & Lloris

Jan Vertonghen was fine when everything was going fine but when he was in a situation he didn't like he downed tools and simply went through the motions with his performances. Captains don't give up and this season the club were looking for a new captain. His attitude didn't go down well with the players and when asked for their say Jan Vertonghen was not a name in the frame.

The club had reportedly already offered him the captaincy as part of contract extension discussions and that would only have happened if he was Pochettino's choice. He didn't gt it in the end and it was given to a player who wasn't worth a place in the team. The players view must have been quite strong for that to have happened and that would have been as a result of his attitude and actions under Tim Sherwood. Regardless of any situation every player should always give 100%, they are letting themselves, their team mates and the supporters down if they don't.

The contract extension remains on the table unsigned as Vertonghen 'got the hump' when he didn't get the captaincy and has refused to sign it. There are other matters to take into consideration though and that is Spurs form.

Jan Vertonghen's future will depend upon Spurs progress. There is plenty of talk linking him with other clubs and his agent has been sounding them out. However, a change of attitude by a few players at Spurs has resulted in an improvement. Vertonghen wants UEFA Champions League football, he'd like it as Spurs captain and with that really needing to be an outfield player there are only two candidates. Vertonghen and Fazio.

His agent has been talking to other clubs, as all agents do, to assess his options before a decision at the end of the season I expect. If Spurs are in the top four I don't expect him to go anywhere. If Tottenham continue to make progress and add to the squad he may well stay, but alternatively if a club offered big wages he could well be off.

The situation boils down to the clubs ambition and ambition does not equal how much money you spend, as most supporters seem to see it. A player can spot a decent player so if Spurs are buying quality players regardless of price then Vertonghen will judge whether he feels Spurs can make the top four or not, yes and he'll stay, no and he won't.

There has been an intense amount of speculation over French captain Hugo Lloris since the summer with most assuming it's only a matter of time before he goes.

The future of Vertonghen & Lloris

It's that simple belief that drives reporters to come up with stories and link him to other clubs. They assume he must be off so if they come up with clubs he may go to then they can claim we first revealed this move back in xyz.

The one factor often overlooked is that Hugo Lloris is very happy at Spurs. He and his family are settled plus the fact that he likes what he sees in this young Spurs side. He thinks Tottenham have the potential to break into the top four so the future potentially holds exciting possibilities. As a goalkeeper he gets to stand and watch a game develop so is in a good position to make a judgement on the team.

The one thing he has highlighted that Spurs have to work on in their mentality, they need to understand and adopt a winning mentality, rather than the I'll do my best mentality, which is limiting. The level of performances Lloris puts in week after week are a testament to his mentality and as such he is a role model for the younger players.

The progress the club makes over the next two transfer windows will probably be crucial in determining his future. He isn't going anywhere in January and there will be plenty of speculation again in the summer. French football holds no interest for him, it's a step down, but PSG can always throw money at a player so it can't be entirely ruled out.

If he left Spurs it would be to one of the major clubs but with the money in the Premier League there are only a handful of clubs that could provide the wage and the level of football he'd want. Spurs fans have assumed he'll be gone in the summer but I'm not so sure, everything I hear at the moment suggests he has no plans to leave.

For both players the development of the side is the important issue, over and above money. There is a personal satisfaction is being part of something, in contributing to taking a club to the next level. The next level for Tottenham is top four and Champions League football, it's close, if it starts getting closer then they may well both stay.
