Kaboul gives Spurs a problem

With Hector Moreno breaking his leg Tottenham signed two centre-backs last summer fully aware that they could go back for Moreno at a lower price in January.

Kaboul gives Spurs a problem

That meant that Vlad Chiriches and Younes Kaboul got a stay of execution, aided by the fact that nobody would pay the asking prices. Eric Dier was a young player for the future so had to be brought along, therefore five centre-backs were needed in the squad.

Dier has shown he can handle the Premier League, he still has a lot to learn but it does mean that he can be developed and used as cover, with Faxio and Vertonghen as the number one pairing.

The captain of the side has to be someone the players trust, they have to support the manager and be his voice on the field and in the changing room. If a player is not doing what the coach has asked it is his role to take responsibility and have a word, if that means he has to give a player a rocket so be it, but at other times it's encouragement that's required.

It's his role to take some of the pressure off the coach so he is not the bad guy all the time. The captain and the coach have to sing from the same hymn sheet. As someone who shouldn't be commanding a regular place in the first team Younes Kaboul was somewhat of a surprise. The squad it seems choose him, I suspect he was not Pochettino's ideal candidate.

After regular mistakes he shot himself in the foot by undermining the new head coach. To go to Pochettino to say his tactics are not working is fine, but to suggest he had the support of the squad in doing so, which is what reports claimed, was a nail in his coffin. The majority it is reported were not against Pochettino's tactics and were not supporting Kaboul, so having tried to get his way and failed he rather made his position untenable.

He has been seen for one midweek cup game but otherwise left on the sidelines, initially with the usual lame injury excuse. His actions have caused Spurs a slight problem as they were keen to offload Vlad Chiriches in January for Moreno, now Kaboul has no future either.

Reports suggest a Chiriches deal is 90% done so do Tottenham keep hold of Kaboul until the end of the season and sell him in the summer with only a year left on his contract or offload him in January, assuming there are takers at our price.

If we off load Chiriches and Kaboul do we stay with Fazio, Vertonghen, Dier and Moreno, assuming the transfer goes through? Does Chiriches now stay, although he is rather a liability at centre-back? Do we buy two replacement players?

With Tottenham open to offers for Kaboul it will probably be a case of whichever one we can get the best deal for leaving and the other leaving in the summer. The alternative is to end up with one experienced centre-back at Premier League level, one who has had half a season and players who then have to adjust to our style of play and the league. As we have seen with Fazio that can take a little time.

I look forward to finding out the Tottenham answer.
