Fazio was happy to wait to join Tottenham

For anyone unsure how the transfer window works and why players don't sign contracts or like to keep their options option Federico Fazio has shed some light on the matter for them.

Fazio was happy to wait to join Tottenham

Pochettino had wanted to sign Hector Moreno but he suffered a broken leg at the World Cup in Brazil. He was one of several possibles. Any club with a list talks to everyone on that list to let them know of their interest. Barcelona for instance spoke with Jan Vertonghen to let him know he was on their possibles list if their first choice fell through.

Federico Fazio and Mateo Musacchio were both on that list along with John Stokes. Third party ownership scuppered any Musacchio deal as with Villarreal wanting £17 million for their 35% piece of him, the total fee would have been £50 million.

Fazio cancelled contract talks with Sevilla and waited to see if anything would come of the Spurs interest and as we now know it did, and didn't take long to complete.

"The deal didn't come through until the end of August but the truth is that Pochettino and the club had already expressed their interest in me since June, even before starting the pre-season with Sevilla.
"So even though it didn't happen until the final days of the transfer window I was not worried about my situation.
"I have almost just arrived but I already feel very comfortable. I am happy both in the pitch, with team and the colleagues, and with the new life in London and with the language.
"It's difficult when you start with a new manager. You have to adapt to the ideas of the new coach but after winning the last three games, including the one in the European league, we hope this can be useful to overcome the campaign.
"After Everton, we are just two points behind the top four. There is still a long way to go. We just think in going game by game and now we are just focusing on the next match with Chelsea.
"Roberto is very happy for the goal but also because he did a great job both in attack and in the defence, pressing very hard during the whole game.
"He was not worried because he was scoring goals in other competitions but this goal is important for his confidence after so long without scoring in the league."

Mauricio Pochettino usually allows players time to adjust to the club and his playing style it seems before he introduces them. He made six signings in the summer, one remained on loan in America but all but Eric Dier had to wait for their chance.

Dier of course started pre-season well, took over from Kyle Naughton at right-back when he was sent-off in the first game. He scored in that game and with Kyle Walker injured had to remain there. Michel Vorm, Benjamin Stambouli and Ben Davies all have had to wait for a chance, Davies now has his through injury to Danny Rose while Fazio has had to overcome a shaky start.

There was no way he was bought as a back-up, being the UEFA Europa League winning captain, so it was a question of when he would become first choice rather then would he.

The same applies to clubs looking to buy Tottenham players, they sound out a player to see if they are interested in a move and what sort of wages they would want, as well as getting a rough idea of a transfer fee. It's where all the stories of a player leaving or Tottenham buying a player come from, most of which are not going to happen.
