Stuck with another player we can't flog

It's the same old story at Tottenham, sign a player on a decent wage and then we can't flog them as nobody but 5 clubs in the country can afford their wages and clubs abroad can't match them.

Couldn't fit his private jet and Rolls Royce in the picture.

The club then get stuck with them, David Bentley and Huerelho Gomes are two that immediately spring to mind. Neither were much interested in leaving Tottenham to play football, Gomes until his contract expired and Bentley until it was too late and he'd ruined his career.

Emmaunel Adebayor is another, the club have tried to off load him before but nobody will entertain his wages and he has publicly said he doesn't see why he should take pay cuts. Manchester City paid him a lump sum to compensate as we refused to pay his £170,000 a week wages. Currently he is not worth the £120,000 he gets, although he showed under Tim Sherwood he can be when he wants to be.

The fact that he is more interested in money explains his string of poor performances, he lacks motivation, he lacks a winners mentality, unless it matters to him. A head coach can't be blamed for that and can't do anything about that as it's within the individuals hands to determine how he reacts to any situation.

This is part of the reason why I champions the cause of the club appointing a sports psychologist to improve the mental processes of players. It can be done but it won't be with team meetings, talking to the captain or even to the coaching staff, none have the qualifications or expertise to handle the matter adequately.

Reports suggest Adebayor is going to refuse to leave and few clubs are interested in a 30-year-old striker who blames the fans for poor performances rather than his own losers attitude. That behavour is unacceptable from a vice-captain, especially on the back of a series of inept performances.

It looks likely that we will be stuck with him until the 2016 season is over, although with a contract due then he might actually try next season, that's the norm for him, even if he claims it isn't.
