Jan Vertonghen again refused to say why he won't sign a new contract at Tottenham despite being pressed on the matter by Belgian newspaper HLN.

Vertoghen again refuses to reveal reason over new contract refusal

“I can only say that the decision was taken in consultation with the club. Sportingly, the beginning of the season was volatile. A good start was followed by a decline and now it's running a little better.”

The club offered a contract, he didn't sign it. All he says here is that he talked, or his agents did, with the club as he would have to do in any contract negotiations. He then avoids the issue totally and remarks about winning the first four games and not winning the next four.

Vertonghem revealed to the press he had refused to sign a contract around the 24th September, which was prior to a game against Nottingham Forest, now that wouldn't have happened that day so it's safe to assume he refused to sign it prior to this. The WBA game was on Sunday 21st September.

Vertonghen had not played against West Ham United, he played against QPR but had not played against Sunderland, nor was he picked for WBA. Therefore by the time he refused to sign a contract Tottenham had won their first 2 games and drawn the third, maintaining an unbeaten start to the season.

Obviously what has happened after he refused to sign has no bearing on him refusing to sign and he has thrown a smokescreen out which plenty don't think about and thus misinterpret.
