Harry Kane reminds of Glenn Hoddle

Seeing Harry Kane don the keepers jersey after scoring a hat-trick against Asteras Tripoli on Thursday was a throw back to the 70's and 80's when you didn't have substitute keepers on the bench, you didn't have 7 substitutes in those days but just the one.

Harry Kane reminds of Glenn Hoddle

If anything happened to the keeper, and tackles were allowed back then rather than falling over to the slightest touch as happens today, then an outfield player would have to do in goal. Immediately the mind springs back to Glenn Hoddle taking over in goal, he was a better keeper than Harry Kane that's for sure.

It was 9th January 1980 an FA Cup tie against Manchester United, a third-round replay at Old Trafford in front of 53. 732 people when Milija Aleksic broke his jaw in a challenge with Joe Jordan.

The Tottenham team that day was: Aleksic (Pratt), Hughton, Miller, Yorath, McAllister, Perryman, Ardiles, Armstrong, Gibson, Hoddle, Villa.

The Manchester United team was:  Bailey, Nicholl, Houston, McIlroy, McQueen, Buchan, Coppell, Wilkins, Jordan, Macari, Thomas (McGrath).

The price of a programme back then was 12p, a litre of fuel would have been 28p, a pint 35p, a loaf of bread 33p, a pint of milk 17p and the average wage was £6,000.

Tottenham had to play for over half an hour with Glenn Hoddle in goal and in extra-time Ossie Ardiles scored the winner.

While Glenn Hoddle kept everyone at bay Harry Kane let the first shot slip easily under his chest and has no intention of volunteering again.

“It is probably the first time all that has happened – someone has scored a hat-trick, ended up in goal and also as captain – so I will probably feature in a few quizzes.
“I never imagined I would finish a game with the name Lloris on the back of my shirt – it was a first and probably a last. The hat-trick overrides the disappointment of letting a goal in."

Score a hat-trick, let in a goal, end up with the match ball, the captain's arm band and win the Man of the Match award. He'll definitely be in a few pub quizzes.
