Tottenham target injured for 68 games in last 3 seasons

According to CalcioMercato, Tottenham are showing an interest in injury prone Yoann Gourcuff, who is also wanted by Arsenal they tell us.

Yoann Gourcuff

If the the 28-year-old has struggled for form and fitness, why would we be interested? At 28 the Lyon man he is the wrong age unless of course we are looking for an understudy for the attacking midfielder role who is happy to sit on the bench.

We have Lamela, Chadi, Eriksen, Kane and Paulinho who can all play there and a host of midfielders in the side. He could provide additional cover as a left sided attacker and would be available on a free transfer next summer, a move he is free to arrange for himself in January.

Gourcuff injured his ankle while taking his dog for a walk before the transfer window opened and Lyon released him. Nobody wanted an injured player so the former French international, he has won 52 caps, had to negotiate a pay cut to remain at Lyon to try to resurrect his career.

He was once very highly rated but hasn't lived up to the hype, indeed through injury he has only played 97 games in 4 years at Lyon. Last season he missed 12 games with a knee injury, 2 games with a groin strain and 7 games with a malleolar injury. In the 2012/13 season he missed 19 games and in the 2011/12 season missed 28 games injured.

With that sort of injury record and recurring knee problems he couldn't command great wages but if he retains the ability that had him hailed as the next Zinidine Zidane we would have to decide whether to take a risk.
