The old newspaper trick still working I see

The summer transfer window has shut, time to start speculating about the window window then, well it is according to the Daily Express.

Antonio Candreva

Transfer talk is of course what sells newspapers, whether it is during a window or not so they have decided that Tottenham and Arsenal are going to do battle (why does everything have to be a fight with the newspapers) for the signature of Lazio winger Antonio Candreva.

It's one of those stories that has little going for it. He's 27, which in Tottenham eyes means he is almost past it, in fact he'll be 28 in February. They quote a figure of £24 million ($38.66m - €29.96m) so there is little hope of increasing his value at that age, another of our prerequisites.

Will Daniel Levy spend £24 million to throw away for a couple of seasons football before he hits 30 and his value plummets. Not a chance, especially not after he has done so for a striker of a similar age who hasn't provided a return on his £26 million ($41.89m - €32.45m) investment so far.

Candreva has four years left on his contract with the Italian side and we prefer to sign players with one year left on their contracts, they are a lot cheaper and no less quality. There are plenty of players about and it makes economic sense, something we have to bear in mind whether we like it or not.

Hang on though in another article the same paper are saying his agents are about to talk to Lazio about a new contract. A wage increase, the captaincy, longer deal. It's the classic case of start a non story, build hope, then run a story scotching the initial story.

An age old media trick that fans lap up time and time again. Still it works like a charm.
