Spurs watching another defensive midfielder

Tottenham are said to be watching the progress of Marseille midfielder Giannelli Imbula. If that is the case then it may well be at the request of Mauricio Pochettino.

Spurs watching another defensive midfielder

Marseilles are now managed by Marcelo Bielsa and finished 6th in Ligue 1 last season before his arrival, they are now top of the table with 16 points having won their last 5 games. They have scored 15 goals and let in 1 in their last 4 games.

Why is his club significant? Because Mauricio Pochettino is a disciple of the Marcelo Bielsa style of football. Bielsa wnated Stambouli and was annoyed that Chairiman Vincent Labrune didn't buy him. Stambouli in fact turned down Marseilles to join Tottenham from Montpellier, where he was already vice-captain.

The 22-year-old, who can also play for France (lives), Congo (parents) or Belgium (birthplace), is another defensive midfielder. That area is a big concern for Pochettino who wants us to move the ball forward quicker, something Dembele and Capoue didn't do against WBA.

Imbula arrived from Guingamp for a fee believed to be £5.16 million ($8.44m - €7m) and made a lot of substitute appearances in his 29 games last season. The youngster completed 6 of the first 12 games and only played 90 minutes once for the remainder of the season. This time around though he plays 90 minutes every week, scoring 1 goal and has had 1 assist in the 7 games so far.

French media sources suggest Tottenham scouts have been watching Marseille games, while Chelsea and Arsenal have been watching him in the past. Franco Baldini also had him watched while he was technical director at Roma.
