Now that we are getting all our players fit Mauricio Pochettino is going to have to decide what his number one defensive midfield pairing is.

Behind the defence midfielders are the defence and that was a priority to sort out during the transfer window, not the strikers.

At the weekend Spurs take on Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Right let's get into the Tottenham News Shorts - Issue 61 that concerns recent news regarding Morgan Schneiderlin, Christian Eriksen, Memphis Depay, Edin Dzeko, Mauricio Pochettino and Yoann Gourcuff.

Morgan Schneiderlin was very guarded in his comments to French paper L’Equipe after they asked him about not being allowed to move to Tottenham.

“I will continue working with my club. Even though I was a little disappointed not to be able to leave this summer, I know it’s part of football.
“Southampton did everything to keep me and they also made some nice signings.
“It is thanks to them that I got into the French team, and now I have to focus on Southampton so I can be selected regularly.”

Christian Eriksen admitted after Denmark's 2016 Euro Championship qualifying group win that he is not up to speed yet and is lacking sharpness which is somewhat surprising given he was not involved in the World Cup, has had a complete pre-season, a USA & Canada tour and we are three weeks into the season.

"I lacked a little sharpness for sure. I found the right places, but I did not really exploit the opportunities that were there. I just lacked the final sharpness."

One wonders when he is going to acquire that final sharpness. Too late for a rather important game against Liverpool. Shouldn't he have acquired it by then, it's not a tap though, it can't be just turned on and off.

Former Holland international Willem Van Hanegem, now 70, has criticised Memphis Depay in the Dutch press. Van Hanegem was capped 52 times by Holland and layed in the 1974 World Cup final where they were beaten by hosts West Germany so knows a thing or two about the game.

Tottenham and Manchester United were said to be interested in Depay but his £17 million asking price was excessive and no offers were made for the player. It was a press story they ran all summer only revealing at the end that nobody had actually made any bids for the player. Clearly the price was too high for what he had achieved so when his desired move to the Premier League failed to materialise he was left to to sign a new contract. Van Hanegem was not been impressed with Depay so far this season.

"I keep seeing him lying on the floor, whining to the referee, looking bewildered and stuff. This is because Van Gaal is away from him. Then you have to watch that laziness strikes.
"Louis was during the course of the World Cup, very short with him. In Brazil Depay played some nice games, but not even really special though."

Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko sees Chelsea are their title rivals this season, although doesn't discount other improving rivals including Spurs.

“This season Chelsea might be the most serious challenger, but we mustn't ignore Liverpool, Tottenham, Arsenal, or United, who will certainly be much stronger than last year."

Mauricio Pochettino was asked why he let Sandro join QPR and side Tottenham had too many players and simply had to let some go so he had to make a decision. My guess is he told Sandro quite early because his performances were ordinary until Napoli failed to qualify for the Champions League then suddenly we saw a performance that was the Sandro of old. Next thing QPR come in for him.

"You need to take a decision. It is true that we have a bigger squad and needed to reduce our squad – in these moments you need to make a decision but this is football."

Lyon president, Jean Michel Aulas, has suggested to RMC, a private French-Monégasque radio station, that Yoann Gourcuff took in excess of a 25% pay cut to remain at the Ligue 1 club instead of a move to the Premier League with ourselves as one of his suitors.

"He has made a very substantial parting with some of his salary, over 25%."
