Likely transfer targets or not?

Just because he transfer window is shut doesn't mean Tottenham stop scouting and the Portuguese press are saying we had scouts at the Benfica UEFA Champions League tie against Zenit St Petersburg, which ended as expected in a win for Zenit.

Likely transfer targets or not?

There are suggestions that we may have been watching a couple of Argentinians, surprise surprise. So who are they are what are the likelihood of doing any business in January or more likely next summer.

First up is Enzo Perez is an Argentinian midfielder who has a contract until 2018 and is 29 in February. Both of those factors counts against him and make him an unlikely signing. Nether the length of his contract nor his age fit in with our general transfer policy, although exceptions can always be made.

While he can play the attacking midfielder role or on the right he generally plays a deeper central midfield so in our system, the Mousa Dembele role. We do seem to have a number of players that can play in his area and we are still after another one in Morgan Schneiderlin.

We tend to like players in the last year of their contracts as they become cheaper. A player with a year left like Kaboul can arrange a free transfer in January for the end of the season so clubs tend to sell them while they can still command a fee instead of letting them go for free. The longer the contract the more expensive the same player is, not a hard and fast rule but a rule of thumb.

The second player is an old face, Nicolas Gaitan. He is another Argentinian, this time an attacking midfielder who is 27 in February and his contract runs out in 2016. He can play either side of an attacking three as well, indeed he plays a lot on the left and looks the more obvious of the two proposed.

A contract until 2016 means after June he'd only have one year left, just the length of contract Daniel Levy like to start negotiating on. He sounds far more feasible and may be available for a sensible fee.
