VIDEO vs Benfica - Bentaleb future looks assured among midfield change

Nabil Bentaleb is a driven man and shrugs off the doubters among Tottenham fans who thought is sacrilege a badly performing Sandro wasn't being picked.

Nabil Bentaleb Spurs future assured

Things have settled a little at Tottenham, the targets are clear, Mateo Musacchio at centre-back and Morgan Schneiderlin as a playmaking defensive midfield. Bids in for strikers which if they come off all well and good, if not we play with what we have. Jay Rodfiguez wanted for left attacking midfield in a three behind a lone striker, more likely in January or next summer though.

Spurs have a glut of midfielders for central areas so if Schneiderlin arrives one will be leaving and Sandro looks to be favourite at the moment. There is interest in him and Capoue is being preferred in pre-season. Mauricio Pochetino wants his defensive midfielders to be passers of the ball and Nabil Bentaleb at only 19 has shown a range of passing to fit that role.

He has shown a level of maturity beyond his years after being rejected by French football and deciding to try his luck over in England. Tim Sherwood was the only one to see he had something where everyone else though he was too small.

From Development Squad to the knock-out stages of a World Cup in 6 months is an achievement for any footballer let alone one so young. The danger is then that a youngster thinks they have made it,get too much money and their development stops. The signs are that that is not going to be happening with Bentaleb.

"One or two tried to say I was only in the team because Tim Sherwood knew me from the youth teams. If people think I am still that little kid, then that's up to them.
"But I have been to the World Cup and I am looking forward to improving even more at Tottenham under the new manager.
"This time last year I could never have dreamt I would go to the World Cup.
"My aim back then was just to try to get near the first team at Tottenham. But once you achieve one goal, you set yourself a new one - and everything I set myself last season I achieved. And more.
"Now I want to keep improving at Tottenham and be a regular starter."

The winners attitude shouts at you through those words, I set goals, then I set tougher ones and work my way to achieve them. The video below is his performance in a youthful team stretched against Benfica in Portugal.

Behind him he has Sandro and Fryers as centre-backs so he needed to protect them and provide a barrier. As the game continued into the second half his passing range increased but he was composed on the ball throughout.

There is clearly more learning to do, more improvement to come but he could be around for years with us and it'll be interesting to see how he progresses under Pochettino's tutelage, Pochettino being a former Argentinian centre-back so well versed in defensive requirements.

As the Tottenham squad reshaping continues the Algerian's place looks assured.
