Strengthening the Tottenham defence

Mauricio Pochettino arrived at Tottenham and in his first meeting with Daniel Levy and Franco Baldini highlighted the defence as needing upgrading, primarily at left-back and centre-back.

Ben Davies emerged as the number one choice at left-back with various alternatives should a deal not be possible. It was though and he joined Danny Rose, who has signed a new improved 5-year-contract as the two main contenders for the role.

Also on the books but with seemingly no future at Tottenham is Benoit Assou-Ekotto with Zeki Fryers, Kyle Naughton and Jan Vertonghen also able to provide cover.

Over at right-back Kyle Walker is slowly recovering from his groin injury but played no pert in the recent friendly against Celtic in Finland where we used 21 players.

His understudy is currently Kyle Naughton, with 21-year-old Ryan Fredericks emerging but not yet ready for regular action. Tottenham are attempting to sign 21-year-old DeAdre Yedlin from Seattle Sounders and loan him back for the remainder of 2014.

He caught the eye with performances as a substitute for USA at the World Cup, he looked perfectly at home on the world stage and was a player I thought we should sign as back-up to Walker and to maintain a firm presence in the US market. Americans playing abroad are media news and that keeps our name on everyone's mind giving us excellent exposure.

For the deal to happen it needs to be completed today. The other option would be new signing Eric Dier who can play there but has been bought as a centre-back. Assuming the Yedlin go through our right-back situation would be:

In goal Hugo Lloris signed a new 5-year-deal, Brad Friedel signed a new !-year-deal and Michel Vorm was brought in from Swansea as number two. That allows Brad one final year as cover before he moves into coaching.

At centre-back we have identified youth and experience to add strength. The experienced pair we settled on were Héctor Moreno and Dejan Lovren. Moreno broke his leg at the World Cup in Brazil and Lovren chose Liverpool.

Thus we have turned our attention to highly rated Villareal  23-year-old defender Mateo Musacchio. Rumour and counter rumour but all parties expect a deal to be completed while the Spaniards try to eke out a little more from Daniel Levy.

That left a youngster to buy and three were highlighted 20-year-old Eric Dier, who we had been following for more than two years, 20-year-old Jamaal Lescelles and 20-year-old John Stones. As we know Dier was the man we settled on and signed.

Who will leave is discussed in this article: Dawson, Kaboul, Chiriches, which two leave?

By the end of this window we could potentially have signed a right-back, a left-back, a goalkeeper and two centre-backs. We certainly look as if we have added strength in depth to a problem area of the team.

Transfer windows should no be looked at in isolation though and we should be preparing for the next summer one, knowing who we are going to sell and creating spaces in the squad for non-home grown players so we can buy early.
