Southgate - Tough challenge for Dier

Eric Dier has come to Spurs as a young centre-back from Sporting in Portugal and is a member of the England Under 21 team.

Southgate - Tough challenge for Dier

He is a layer I have been shouting we should buy fr 2 years and after his performance against Schalke, some of you now realise why, he is a talent waiting to blossom. Last season he didn't get the number of first team starts he would have liked, he only played in 14 Primeira Liga games for a total of 901 minutes, equivalent to 10 full games.

That may have been a result of him refusing to sign a new contract with a £36.12 million (€45m) release clause in it, we picked him up for £3.96 million (€5m). He sat on the bench for 16 games.

He is only 20-years-old and is not the finished article, as such you'd be surprised if he were thrown into a London derby in a must win game, after last season, on the opening day of a new season in a new and higher standard league. You would expect the club to give him time to acclimatise as it were, get used to a match day and everything that goes on around it, see a game live from the sideline and get an idea of what is required at this level.

I see some are picking him in the team straight away, if there are injuries that could happen, Vlad Chiriches and Michael Dawson are not certain to be fit while Jan Vertonghen was away at the World Cup and is behind others in terms of fitness.

Throwing him into the lions den wouldn't be the ideal start especially as Younes Kaboul, our one fully fit centre-back is at the moment nothing like the player he was. He is back to making mistakes again and could easily have been punished for two of them against Schalke. He won't get away with them in the Premier League (EPL) so lightly.

Gareth Southgate was a former Premier League (EPL) centre-half himself, an England centre-half so knows a thing or two about the position. As England Under 21 manager he has seen him close up and thinks it will be a struggle to grab a first team spot at White Hart Lane initially.

"I know Eric was keen to come back to England, he had a difficult season last year when he didn’t get a lot of first team football in Lisbon.
"He’s a young centre-back who will mature but he plays in a position which takes time to develop so it’s an interesting move for him to test himself over here.
"We monitored him very closely when he was in Lisbon and I didn’t mind the fact he was over there. In fact, I thought it was a real positive for us to have a player playing abroad.
"To try and get into the first team at Spurs will be a big challenge for him, but he might feel that it helps his cause because it’s easier for us to get to see him."

Dier is an individual who has had to overcome challenges, like learning in a language he didn't understand, fighting for a place in the centre of the Tottenham defence won't phase him, it's just another one to overcome.
