Pochettino needed time to assess Spurs squad
Once again Spurs fans have been complaining we haven't bought early, totally forgetting it seems that we have a new head coach who wanted to have a look at all the players for a few weeks before he decided which players to let go and which to keep.
An initial meeting with Daniel Levy and Franco Baldini highlighted areas that needed improvement, mainly left-back and central defence. However the club can't just go out and buy, there are simply no squad places available so we have to sell before we can bring players in and our players are in no rush to take a step down and leave, why would they be. Thus we have to deal, we have to arrange a sale and a purchase so we know we are creating a gap we can fill.
That simplistically is where we are at, we bought Ben Davies in an area we needed cover but haven't found a home for Benoit Assou-Ekotto yet. We have moved Gylfi Sigyrdsson on and brought in a back up goalkeeper we need.
Eric Dier has come in which means a centre-back is going, whichever one of the three can be shifted. Lazio don't want to pay our asking price for Kaboul, nobody wants to pay the asking price for Chiriches and Dawson might still be needed so doesn't want to go just yet. If we bring in another centre-back we have to release some non-home grown players and that means Kaboul and Chiriches.
Those were Pochettino's words not long ago. Every manager has to say he is happy with his squad, he does have to work with them everyday so he can't really say anything else.
Some players have been away at a World Cup and then had a 3 week holiday while he has been able to work with some of them. He has taken some youth on the pre-season North America tour, we were missing 10 first team squad players and had a look at them also.
From there he has been able to pencil some names in, scratch some out and then he has needed to have a look at the World Cup players on their return. Then and only then can he finally make the decisions he needs to to strengthen the squad. Hardly surprising then that we weren't buying at the start of the window.

It was good to hear the outside view though, that other teams see us as having high quality players, we sometimes think they are not the way they perform. It's not always down to the player though, the system has to be right. A manager should be trying to get the best out of a team by devising a system that suits the players at his disposal.
For Pochettino that means a high energy attacking game that entertains. It is not always easy to bring success with entertaining football, the two haven't always gone together.

"I'm happy with the squad. From the outside you can see Tottenham have unbelievable players, which is true, but we can improve.
"We will try and add some players but we don't expect many changes because the club, over the last season, made some unbelievable investment in the squad and we want to develop those players.
"At the moment we are starting to analyse every player. It's a lot different seeing a player from the outside and getting a feeling for the player [in training]. It's important to get a feel for them and then take a decision."
