Jan Vertonghen Performance Report

Jan was back to the Jan we know. None of the half-hearted going through the motions performances that characterised his time under Tim Sherwood but instead the sound, assured, switched on Jan we all prefer. In fairness QPR offered little in attack so he didn't have much to do, when QPR made any threat they made it towards the right hand side of the centre-back pairing.

It was a comfortable game that any competent defender shouldn't have had any trouble with and he didn't. He brought the ball out of defence at times and carried on forward if there were sufficient cover an an opportunity for a quick counter attack but he was never caught out of position up the field. His pairing with Danny Rose was problematical last season but it was secure today which is encouraging for the season ahead.

Against AEL Limassol there were times when he looked a little rusty, he had a new central defensive partner he'd never played with a competitive game of course but this was an ideal game for his first Premier League start, not too taxing. Corners are still a worry, as I said in Kaboul's report he is lost at corners at the moment and that has a knock on effect on the whole defence.

Better teams will exploit it, indeed QPR could and should have scored 2 goals from corners, Caulker was guilty of an horrendous miss from a couple of yards when unmarked so major work from corners to do as a defensive unit.
