Étienne Capoue Performance Report

Étienne Capoue showed why Tottenham are happy to let Sandro leave when he moaned under Tim Sherwood and sought a way out to Italy. His agent was very happy to court interest from Italian clubs through their media which led to a statement from Sandro saying he knows he is loved by Spurs fans. Since injury he is not the player he was and Pochettino has decided Étienne Capoue is the main midfield man now.

He produced another performance as a destroyer in front of the back four who can then pass a ball when in possession. He looked a fantastic player when he first arrived before his own injury got in the way and his owns moans that he wasn't playing. His moans were because he wanted to go to the World Cup so needed to be playing, as it was he forced his way into the side and got injured again.

Capoue has started this season off in the similar vein. He and Bentaleb formed a solid pairing that Dembele, Paulinho and Holtby will do well to split. The key to victory was winning the midfield battle, without that the front four attackers wouldn't be free to do their stuff so while the plaudits go to the front four, Capoue and Bentaleb deserve their own praise.

Sandro may be a fans favourite but he has been a favourite to leave all window and Capoue looks as dominating as Sandro did at his best. He, importantly, stays on his feet more and has the physicality to get his body between man and ball rather than go to ground in a tackle and be out the game. That is still in the locker of course but it's not the first option. As this season progresses he is going to be one of the most important players we have.
