Tottenham chase Konoplyanka
Buying a player from Ukraine seems fraught with difficulties, deals are not straight forward as we are finding out with Dnipro left winger Yevhen Konoplyanka.
Igor Kolomoisky, Dnipro president, has been discussing a move with us for a while now, everything may have gone quiet but Tottenham are still actively chasing the 24 year-old who will be 25 in September. Liverpool have been in for him, West Ham have put in a low £9.5 million (€11.98m) bid but Spurs interest has not gone away. Manchester United have been watching developments and Roma are interested.
There is no shortage of suitors for the Ukrainian who is believed to have a £11.89 million (€15m) release clause in his contract. Back in March Kolomoisky revealed he was negotiating with Daniel Levy and that he felt his star man should choose Spurs as his next destination.
The left side has been a side of concern, we have had creative players there but at the expense of defensive work and its an area that has been identified as needing upgrading. We have bought Ben Davies in at left-back and we are still trying to bring in two centre-backs, one young, one with experience.
Alongside that the left hand side of midfield needs the threat that we now hold from the right with Erik Lamela. Bringing someone in with that goal threat but who can also perform his defensive duties will considerably strengthen a weak spot and increase our attacking threat.

Nacer Chadli was bought to fulfil that role but he didn't match up so we ended up playing Sigurdsson there again and relying on Christian Eriksen in the end. Pochettino will have to make his own mind up and he hasn't seen Chadli in training yet so wants to see him and the other World Cup players before making final decisions.
Lennon has been played on the left, but in the left channel rather than a left winger so while Townsend has been playing right but like Lamela scored his goal from the left. That versatility Chadli hasn't nailed down the slot the club see Konoplyanka as the answer.
I hope eventually we can pull it off, he's the sort of player I want to see at The Lane.

"I certainly understand that the big clubs like Liverpool try to do everything on the last day [of the transfer window], but this time it did not work. That is we ran into technical problems, and Liverpool failed with their bid. I talked with Konoplyanka. Of course, he had regrets, but [the move to Liverpool] failed purely due to technical reasons.
"Not criticising Liverpool but if I’m interested in a player, like they were in final days, I’d do it on or two weeks before [the window closes].
"I’m talking with Tottenham president [Daniel Levy]. He wants Konoplyanka. We’re negotiating and we may even be close to signing a contract if Yevhen agrees.
"If I was in Konoplyanka’s place I’d choose Tottenham. London, not Liverpool. Football is 90 minutes on the field, maybe two matches per week, but the rest of a footballer’s time should be living somewhere nice. London city life is preferable to Liverpool.
"Negotiations with the Tottenham are on an entirely different level [to Liverpool’s] approach. Overall it’s all grown-up with an understanding of the interests of the player and the club.
"Two different worlds, two different lifestyles, although one country and one Premier League."
