Tom Carroll, the assistants assistant as a player Tim Sherwood wanted back at Tottenham, he would certainly have given him games. Now is his chance to impress Pochettino.

Attitude is everything in sport, by attitude I mean the attitude of the mind as Germany showed in winning the World Cup. Gareth Bale has it and Christian Eriksen looks as if he has it.

The creative midfield player must be able to play with the inside and outside of both feet and must be able to do it around the penalty area not where it doesn't matter on the half-way line.

A look at the Barcelona centre-back search and how Jan Vertonghen is involved.

Right let's get into the Tottenham News Shorts - Issue 30, recent news which concerns Spurs match, Jan Vertonghen, Roberto Soldado and Arturo Vidal.

Tottenham will play a behind closed doors game against Southend United on Wednesday morning at our place.

Tottenham are making fresh moves to try to secure 20 year-old John Stones from Everton. The highly rated youngster was on the stand-by list for the World Cup and will be hard to prise away from the Merseysiders.

The Express are suggesting Jan Vertonghen could be on his way to Barcelona but he is merely one of several stand-by options and negotiations over a new contract for the Belgian continue.

Vertonghen is happy at Spurs but obviously if Barcelona do come calling it would be difficult to resist. The Spanish club want to sign two centre-backs this summer and one is almost certain to be Jérémy Mathieu who did not return to pre-season training today, having told the club he wants to move.

Valencia are demanding £15.95 million (20m) +tax, which is the release clause figure in his contract while Barcelona want to pay £11.96 million (15m).

Valencia coach Nuno Espirito Santo has attempted to convince the press Mathieu missing training has nothing to do with a potential imminent move.
"He is a Valencia player, but we thought it was opportune that he rested so he would be in perfect conditions today."

There has been plenty of speculation regarding Roberto Soldado, rumours were rife that he had told his agent to get him out of Tottenham and that he'd take a wage cut to get a move.

Well nobody was ever going to pay the sort of fee we would have wanted so that was never going to be a starter but from what I hear he is happy with the new boss and isn't looking to leave.

You never know in football of course and Inter Milan are being mentioned at the moment but they won't pay anywhere near £26 million so that won't happen. With Ade being released from hospital after his mild bout of malaria, Soldado is our main striker on the pre-season tour to USA and Canada with back up from Harry Kane.

The Mail are reporting that the Arturo Vidal to Manchester United move is off. Agreement could not be reached with the 27 year-old Chileans representatives so Louis Van Gaal will be looking elsewhere. They have plenty of irons in the fire and have sounded out plenty of players
