Former Tottenham captain Ledley King has been given a part-time coaching role with the club’s Under-18 team. He will combine those duties with his Ambassador role and work he does with the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation.

Academy manager John McDermott wants senior players as coaches within the club, assuming they are quality coaches of course, not every former player suits coaching.

"Ledley has come through the coaching training programme undertaken by a number of senior players in recent seasons, including Scott Parker, Brad Friedel and Michael Dawson.
"We are now looking for Ledley to spend 2-3 days a week assisting our Under-18 group with their on and off pitch development.
“Using senior players as role models within our academy is a scheme we are keen to nurture and develop further.”

Happy 50th birthday to Jürgen Klinsmann who enjoyed two successful spells with us, 1994-95 and 1998.

Happy 44th birthday to Paolo Tramezzani who was a defender with us from 1998-2000.

Today in 2004 we signed Swedish defender Erik Edman from FC Heerenveen for £2 million. He was sold a year later.

Today in 2007 we sold Hossam Ghaly to Birmingham City for £3 million (subject to a work permit) only for him to object to their training methods so they pulled out of the deal. Signed in 2006 he threw his shirt to the floor after being substituted in 2007 and never played for the club again. He was sent on loan in 2008 and eventually left in 2009.

Today in 2008 Frenchman midfielder Steed Malbranque joined Sunderand who has already signed Pascal Chimbonda and Teemu Tainio from us.

Also today in 2008 we signed David Bentley from Blackburn Rovers, not one of our most successful transfers.

On this day we have played 5 international club friendlies, Viking Stavanger (Norway) 1984 W 1-0, Orebro SK (Sweden) 1987 L 1-3, Brann (Norway) 1991 D 1-1, Steaua Bucharest (Romania) 1995 L 2-3 and Internazionale (Italy) 2006 W 2-1.

Spurs held talks with Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger in Canada last week over the potential transfers of wantaway stars Morgan Schneiderlin and Jay Rodriguez. There are reports that new manager Ronald Koeman has told Krueger to sell any player that wants to leave and speculation suggest a fee of between £35 million & £50 million for the pair.

Spurs are highly unlikely to pay any more than £20 million for Schneiderlin, if that, and Rodriguez is injured so a fee around £40 million for the pair makes sense. Southampton are said to be interested in Danny Rose so there may be discussions about which players can go the other way as part of any deal.

The latest ITK suggest the Rodriguez deal is done bar a medical and that Schneiderlin has now handed in a transfer request. The club force a player to do this is order to forgo having to pay a compensation package to him for leaving. The latest word from the Southampton chairman is they are not for sale and will stay at the Saints.

Jay Rodriguez has a contract until 2016, all he has to do is refuse as he has done to sign another and then next summer he only has a year left, his price drops again as he enters the final year of a contract that allows him to negotiate a free transfer in January for the end of the season and Southampton get nothing. Rodriguez holds all the aces.

By keeping Schneiderlin they are refusing him regular international football (French players have been told they must be playing in Europe) which will go down like a lead balloon. Nabil Bentaleb can probably develop into just as good a player though and maybe Ryan Mason as well.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has revealed that he spoke with Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modrić over a move to Stamford Bridge this summer. Not much chance of that ever happening, why would a player who plays every game leave Real Madrid.
