Tottenham still tracking Fredy Guarín

Mauricio Pochettino plays a high energy pressing game so the midfield players especially need to be supremely fit.

Tottenham still tracking Ferdy Guarín

An ability to run all day will be required so it is no surprise that we are once again trying to get Colombian Fredy Guarín. South Americans are tough, Nairo Quintana and Rigoberto Urán lead the Giro d'Italia (Tour of Italy cycling race) and are cheap if you take them directly from South America.

Radamel Falcao for instance cost Porto £3.20 million (€3.93m) from top Argentinian side River Plate. He then went to Atlético Madrid for £32.53 million (€40m) with £8.13 million (€10m) add-ons before moving to Monaco for a reported £48.79 million (€60m).

Porto bought Fredy Guarín from Saint-Étienne for £813,230 (€1m) and sold him to Inter Milan for £8.95 million (€11m).

They can be high return, low risk purchases although buying from South America is not always easy with third part ownership.

His general passing, tackling and finishing could be better but his strengths are crossing, dribbling, long shots and through balls. He likes to cut inside from wide and does commit rather a lot of fouls. Those attributes show he is one of a number of players on our list but it's unlikely he is at the top of it given his age, he'll be 28 before next season.

Guarin is being monitored by a host of clubs including Chelsea, Manchester United, Italian champions Juventus and German side Wolfsburg so we face competition for should we decide to make an offer. His wages in 2012 were £34,500 a week so we would offer him around £45,000 now.

He only signed a new contract in March but was nearly sold in January to Juventus. Inter, rather like ourselves, have an abundance of midfielders so rumours of a transfer continue.

Gazzetta dello Sport report Inter are very keen to bring Erik Lamela back to Italy and have previously suggested a swap deal. It would have to involve some cash as Lamela commands double the fee of Guarín.

Lamela's father Jose who looks after his son together with his agent knows nothing of any interest from from Inter this summer though.
