Spurs left-back candidate fact files

New Tottenham Head Coach Mauricio Pochettino has identified, with Daniel Levy and Franco Baldini, the need to buy a new left-back as one of the priorities this summer, so who are we going to welcome to Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs left-back candidates

Currently Tottenham have Danny Rose as first-choice and Zeki Fryers as his back-up. Both players would benefit from learning from a quality left-back. Benoit Assou-Ekotto has also returned from his loan spell at QPR.

Existing Candidates - Left-back

23 year-old (24 on July 2nd) Danny Rose (Tottenham Hotspur)

Hull City and West Ham United are interested in Rose but Tottenham have no intention of selling and are in negotiations over a new and improved contract. This was Rose's first season at Spurs and he is not the finished article, however after another year he should be close to the final player he will become. Whether that will be good enough remains to be seen.

Rose made 22 appearances last season scoring 1 goal and created 16 chances. He had a 79% passing accuracy, an average pass length of 20m and won 56% of his duels. He made an average of 6 defensive actions and made 3 defensive errors. He received 4 yellow cards and 1 red card that was rescinded.

For Zeki Fryers it was a breakthrough season and he will be hoping to get further games under Pochettino to develop his game further. The club, at least Tim Sherwood anyway, saw him as a centre-back long term so his versatility is useful.

Fryers made 7 appearances last season scoring no goal and created 2 chances. He had a 74% passing accuracy, an average pass length of 19m and won 58% of his duels. He made an average of 3 defensive actions and made 1 defensive error. He received 0 yellow cards and 0 red cards.

3. Benoit Assou-Ekotto
Cameroon
30 year-old (31 on March 24th) Benoit Assou-Ekotto (Tottenham Hotspur)
1.78m (5ft 10in)
Under contract until 30th June 2015
Transfer Value - £4 million

A player who divides Spurs opinion but with a new boss that insists upon details, hard training, high work-rate his approach of I'd rather just turn up and play may cause friction. His loan spell at QPR in the Championship was not particularly successful, his performances were disappointing.

He is not the future but does have experience, however with Pochettino, Levy and Baldini deciding the club needs to buy a new left-back he appears to have little future.

Assou-Ekotto made 31 appearances last season and created 35 chances. He had a 77% passing accuracy, an average pass length of 24m and won 60% of his duels. He made an average of 5 defensive actions and made 3 defensive errors. He received 5 yellow cards and 1 red card.
