Nicolás Gaitán Benfica buyout clause £35.91m

Tottenham are one of the sides to be linked with potential target Nicolás Gaitán, the Benfica winger.

Nicolás Gaitán Benfica buyout clause £35.91m

The 26 year-old had made comments about staying at Benfica last week but he is now quoted as suggesting a move may still be on the cards.

"At the moment I am totally focused on playing for Benfica since I have a contract with them, but I wouldn't mind playing in a different league and, more importantly, to put the club first to help with their serious problems."

Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United have all been mooted as possible destinations should he leave Benfica. United agreed a deal in 2012 for the player but obviously it fell through and have been keeping tabs on him ever since.

The Argentine is under contract with the Europa League runners-up until 2016 and last season scored 8 goals with 10 assists in 43 games in all competitions.

He has been monitored by PSG who in January were reported by A Bola, a daily sports paper in Portugal that Laurent Blanc was keen to sign him. His agent spoke to Portuguese radio station Renascença about the speculation at the time.

"Nothing yet. The market is open, but Nico Gaitan has not gotten any offers."

Now that sound like a player who would be happy to move, Benfica rely buying players cheaply, often from South America, improving them and selling them on at a big profit. As usual in their contracts they have a buyout clause and it is set at a rather large £35.91 million (€45m) for the former Boca Juniors man.

His performances this season have also attracted the attention of Zenit St Petersburg. He was signed in 2010 for £6.70 million (€8.4m) and Liverpool have been reported as willing to pay £15.48 million (€19.4m) to get him.

I don't see any club playing nearly £36 million for him, even if the Russians do throw crazy money for some players. The reports of half that price would be far more accurate. Benfica are believed to need the money as Gaitán himself indicated when spoke of the serious problems at the club.
