A make or break season for Danny Rose
Is this a make or break season for Danny Rose at Tottenham?
Rose started at Leeds United and joined Tottenham in July 2007. Since then he has been developed with loan spells at Watford, Peterborough United, Bristol City and finally Sunderland in the Premier League, for whom he was Player of the Season.
Last term saw him given his chance in the Spurs team at 23 after the club failed in it's attempts to sign a left-back. He is currently a work in progress and is not highly regarded by Spurs fans.
The initial signs were encouraging. Under Andre Villas-Boas he was putting in sold performances, his crossing needed work but in a solid defensive shape he surprised many. The problems arose when the rigid defensive displays were replaced with a more creative attacking style.
That meant less cover in front of him and exposed his positioning, his rash diving into tackles and lack of game reading ability.
To fend off interest Spurs are offering him a new contract, he is apparently still on very low wages so the club must see something in him.
Mauricio Pochettino has a history of working with young players and improving them, he did it at Espanyol where the club had to keep selling all it's better players every window just to survive and at Southampton where he turned players into England stars.

It makes sense to see if Pochettino can work his magic on Danny Rose. He is a home grown player and that makes him valuable. Next season could well be a make or break season for him at the club. He wants to play football and he'll get enough games, the question is how much will he improve.
He has to show he is learning, that there is a player in there waiting to get out. If he can improve then we have a long term solution to our left-back problem, if not then it will be time to let him go and promote 21 year-old Zeki Fryers further.
Every club needs it's stalwarts, Tottenham only have club captain Michael Dawson and vice-captain Aaron Lennon for players to look to. Without stalwarts a club loses a bit of identity so new stalwarts need to be found. If Danny Rose can develop under Pochettino then he has the potential to fill the left-back slot for years and become the player new players turn to to understand what playing for Spurs means.
Improving Rose will be a key requirement for Pochettino next season, even if the club are intending to bring in a new left-back. As it is he has nobody to learn from.
Ricky Lambert revealed that nobody had actually taught him how to play the lone striker role until Pochettino explained it to him. I'm hoping the Argentinian can explain about defending to Danny Rose because he was a centre-back himself so knows all about reading the game and positioning, two areas Rose could benefit from his help.
