Another centre-back watched
Good morning sports fans let's take a look at the early morning headlines.
Tottenham want Fernando Torres from Chelsea and tops our hit list according to Sports Direct News which immediately consigns it to the dustbin. It seems to be extremely rare that they get a story right.
I'd have happily taken Torres after the failure of his £50 move from Liverpool but Chelsea kept hold of him and he has only shown signs of the old player since. At 30 he doesn't have that much time left, he is not getting any quicker and unless he was a first choice every week isn't going to be much use as a squad player.
He doesn't make impact substitution status and he never seems to have any form if he doesn't play regularly. He doesn't fit our young profile so the story seems to have few positives.
Jay Rodriguez of Southampton on the other hand is young and Spurs are said to have moved to the front of the queue, although quite how you do that is never stated. Liverpool and Man City both want him so unless he wanted to be assured of a start every week there seems little appeal to come to us.
Centre-back is an area we desperately need to strengthen, we could do with at least 3 men to replace Jan Vertonghen, Vlad Chiriches and Younes Kaboul. On our radar and on a host of other clubs including Liverpool again is young Dutch international Stefan Di Vrij.
De Vrij is a product of the second best youth academy in Holland at Feyenoord. Composed on the ball, a passer and can fill in at right-back sounds just what we need. He is 6'2" so is good in the air, a definite requirement in the Premier League and is also a good strong tackler. Valued at £5.3 million, although Feyenoord are said to want £10 million and only 22 years-old Di Vrij has all the attributes to make it in England.
Talks have stalled on a new contract as technical director Martin Van Geel explained to Ditch news outlet Algemeen Dagblad.
Stoke City sought assurances from Tottenham that the Spurs players will shake Charlie Adams hand after he put Paulinho our for a month, the third time he has appeared to deliberately injure a Spurs player. He has also been sent off twice against us. The FA of course took no action when we reported Adams for the tackle.
Stoke have received those assurances with Tim Sherwood playing down the ill feeling between the two clubs suggesting he'd have never received a hand shake after his challenges if players reacted like that. Spurs players will respect their opponents he said.

“Talks have stopped and we will wait for the summer. With De Vrij, we have already made the decision to wait until after the World Cup (before re-evaluating the situation).”
