March - The season defining month
For Tottenham Hotspur March will define their season, it will all be decided in three crucial games.
Sunday 2nd Tottenham v Cardiff 4.30pm
Saturday 8th Chelsea v Tottenham 5.30pm
Sunday 16th Tottenham v Arsenal 4pm
Sunday 23rd Tottenham v Southampton 1.30pm
Sunday 30th Liverpool v Tottenham 4pm
Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool all in the space of a month, Saturday 8th, Sunday 16th and Sunday 30th.
Two away, where we are better and one at home. Tim Sherwood has Spurs playing an attacking brand of football but that does leave us open to being attacked ourselves. We do give the opposition the chance to score and sides of the quality of these three you would expect to take their chances.
We score goals but do we score enough to beat three of the top four? Liverpool are prolific at home and thrashed us at White Hart Lane under Andre Villas-Boas. In the recent cup tie against Arsenal, they coasted it and we looked distinctly second best. Chelsea are top of the table so according to that a better team than these two.
Three defeats and Champions League football has gone. Liverpool have the easiest run-in of the top clubs so it is imperative that we come out of March better off than we are now, 6 points behind Liverpool, 7 if you appreciate being level on points isn't good enough.
That is probably going to take two victories in those games which may well mean us playing a game that allows them chances. Tim is not adverse to a risk it seems and a risky brand of football may be needed. What was served up to beat Everton simply won't be good enough. Keeping sides out and getting a draw is likely to lose us 2 points on Liverpool so by the time we play them there may well be a gap.
We simply have to create chances which will leave us vulnerable on the counter-attack. Dnipro showed how fast asleep some of our players can be. Danny Rose was dreadful and tracking back the way he did in that game will see chances galore being created down our left.
It is a month to keep the fingers crossed, a month to hope. To be brutally honest we don't look like a top four team, we are hanging on but our grip could begin to slip.
Teams rarely win at the Bridge so a point may be the best we can expect. That means the Cardiff game is a must win and probably the Arsenal game as well.
A look at the Liverpool fixtures shows home games against Chelsea and Man City as well as ourselves and an away trip to Manchester United which hardly hold the fears it once did. Apart from that they have to play Southampton, Cardiff, West Ham, Norwich City and Crystal Palace away with home ties against North East rivals Sunderland and Newcastle.
Apart from our March fixtures we have Sunderland, Fulham and Aston Villa at home with away games at WBA, Stoke City and West Ham.
Arsenal too have a tough set of fixtures though with Stoke, ourselves and Chelsea their next three fixtures all away before Man City at home then Everton away, followed by West Ham at home, Hull away, Newcastle at home, WBA at home and Norwich City away.
Man City have away ties to play at Hull, Man U, Arsenal, Liverpool, Crystal Palace and Everton with home fixtures against Fulham, Southampton, WBA, Aston Villa and West Ham to play.
Chelsea have Fulham, Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, Swansea, Liverpool and Cardiff to play away with home fixtures remaining against ourselves, Arsenal, Stoke City, Sunderland and Norwich City.
It's Chelsea's title to lose, Man City hot on their heels with Arsenal you'd think finishing third leaving Liverpool and Spurs fighting for the remaining place you'd say looking at the fixtures.
Plenty of ups and downs to go, let's hope there are more ups than down and that we grab that elusive Champions League place.
